“Bietjie van dit en ñ bietjie van dat.” - Little bit of this
and little bit of that.
That is how I learned to cook! To this day, whenever I phone
either of my folks to remind me how to make something, the Afrikaans word “bietjie”
(meaning little) pops into the instructions without fail. The meaning in the
context of cooking however does not necessary always imply a little bit and therein
lies the beauty, the open road to explore the culinary arts.
My passion for cooking and baking is one that has only
really developed over the past ten years, prior to that I avoided the kitchen
as much as possible and my husband will gladly share with you my kitchen mishaps
from our first few years of marriage. Now almost 17 years later I can say, “There
is hope!”
I cook from the heart and I love adding flavour and colour.
I hope to share with you my favourite family recipes to give you some inspiration
to add your own “bietjie” love. Some of
my most cherished childhood memories are around food and family, and so I hope
to honour the memory of my loved ones from generations past by sharing their culinary
wisdom passed down to me.
I love bargain shopping without comprising on quality, so I
intend to share some kitchen economics with you to help stretch your household
budget.
My kitchen is my happy place! It is a space where my mind
wonders away from all the worries of the world and I can create delicious meals
for my family. I hope you will enjoy the journey from my kitchen to yours!
Looking forward to your recipes, Eliza.
